PAYO OPPOSES MOVES TO AMEND THE JUVENILE JUSTICE WELFARE ACT
The Philippine Action on Youth and Offenders (PAYO) recently reiterated its position opposing moves to amend the six-year old RA 9344 otherwise known as the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006.
PAYO deplored the general thinking that children have to be punished in order for them to be corrected. It also criticized heavily the move of the legislators to re-introduce concepts in the old PD 603 in our juvenile justice system, which will be an obvious retrogression to the obsolete system of justice.
PAYO underscored the need for the law to be fully implemented first before any amendment must be introduced.
The PAYO, along with other child rights groups are now lobbying to oppose the amendments of the JJWA.
